Laura Wright
Outstanding Performer for the week of January 3
While it is bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding, it is even worse luck for the bride to sleep with another man the night before - as Laura Wright's Cassie proved on Guiding Light.
The bride's "something borrowed" shouldn't be the nephew (who had already bedded her daughter), and the "something blue" shouldn't be the bride.
Cassie awakened the morning of her nuptials and asked her companion, "Don't you know that it's bad luck to be with me?" More like the other way around, when Jonathan popped out from under the covers, leaving her staring, slack-jawed. Silently, she wrapped herself in a sheet and scrambled off the bed in horror. Backed against a wall, she fidgeted with her hair. "This wasn't supposed to happen," Wright whispered. "Why can't I remember?" She accused him of drugging her and insisted nothing happened, even though the horror in Wright's eyes revealed Cassie felt differently.
Finally, she broke down and demanded, "What did you do to me?" in a menacing voice. Wright's eyes were swollen with tears and contempt, showing her mix of anger, fear and desperation. "You sick, twisted liar!" she wailed as she flailed at him with her fists.
Her catharsis was interrupted by Edmund's knock, which froze Wright with a mask of unblinking fear on her face. Her lips quivered, her head twitched and her breathing came in high, short gulps. She frantically gestured the boy out of her room and answered the door, bedraggled and verging on tears.
Blinking in confusion, Cassie babbled incoherently at Edmund. When he asked if she still wanted to marry him, her expression softened. Wright melted into vulnerability. "I love you so much," she said, her voice weighted with pity.
The tears flowed as she bolted the door then noticed the camera. "Omigod," she mumbled as she dropped to her knees and realized that Jonathan had recorded their messy tryst.
Later, in Cassie's wedding gown, a trembling Wright fell to her knees again and clung to Reva, gasping for breath. She wanted to tell her sister, but - "What if I disappoint him?" she asked between sniffles, knowing that she already had.
Edmund seeing his bride hadn't brought bad luck; she did that to herself. But GL fans were lucky to witness Wright's performance. JD
