CAROLYN'S CORNER
Soap Opera Weekly
December 25, 2005
This week's guest is Laura Wright, who recently took over the role of Carly Corinthos on General Hospital.
Carolyn: Is it true that you had to make out with Maurice Benard (Sonny), Steve Burton (Jason), and Ted King (Lorenzo) your first week?
Laura: Yes! None of them was in real time except for Ted. My first week I didn't really speak except for flashback scenes. With Maurice, we shot all four of our recreated flashbacks in the same night, and one of them was a kissing scene.
Carolyn: Were you nervous?
Laura: Yes. Afterward, I screamed, "Oh my God. I just kissed Maurice Benard!"
Carolyn: Did he hear you?
Laura: Yes. He laughed. I think he was more embarrassed than I was. You have to break the awkwardness of kissing someone you know nothing about.
Carolyn: How were the scenes with Steve?
Laura: Very intense, because they were from when Carly and Jason first met and they were having sex above Jake's. That's the only reason we were smooching, so non of the Sam/Jason fans want to hunt me down and kill me. Not yet.
Carolyn: How was it kissing Ted King again? (The worked together on Loving/The City in the mid-'90's)
Laura: Like riding a bike.
Carolyn: How have the fans been to you?
Laura: I havent heard anything negative from anyone. I've been on the ABC.com boards, and I've been on my board - what are they going to say, mean things about me (laughs)? I can just remove those posts if I don't like them! I've read maybe one or two unsupportive ones, but those are just people who want me back at Guiding Light as Cassie.
Carolyn: Have you been on Media Domain or SoapZone?
Laura: When I was on Guiding Light, I would go on Media Domain, but I learned that they don't always have nice things to say. You can have your opinion, but its how you give it is what hurts people. They talk about people's husbands and kids, and its ugly. So I don't choose to go on there.
Carolyn: Would you understand if fans were less than receptive to you?
Laura: Yes because I'm a soap fan myself. When people are recast - especially major characters that are hugely adored - fans don't like it. Carly isn't a character where people go, "Oh isn't she the sweetest?" People love to hate her.
Carolyn: Any romance on the horizon?
As far as I know, not through February. I have interactions with Patrick Drake the doctor, so people are assuming something there, but its not happening. I'm only using him to help out with a sick kid.
Carolyn: Had you seen GH's other Carly's?
Laura: Yes. Everyone seems to like the spunk of the Sarah Brown version that I'm bringing to this character. Like when Carly sneaks out of the hospital, its funny. She gets caught by Lorenzo sneaking back in the window, she steals her dads cell phone, she gets dressed up & those are the antics that I find fun. She can also turn on a dime and cry like a baby because she misses her kids. There are so many levels to her - and no boundries.
Carolyn: Are you trying to make Carly more wacky?
Laura: Not on purpose. I just find Carly someone that would scrap in a second. She'll throw down, at least in the writing I'm getting. She can turn on the charm, and she can street-fight.
Carolyn: How will you know when you've made it as Carly?
Laura: I dont know if I ever want to know that I've "made it", because I don't want to be so confident that I stop trying to do the best work I can possibly do. And I'm not doing if for the Web sites to love me, because fans' opinions change. I just want to be a good actor.
Carolyn: What do you like best about GH?
Laura: On this show, they go from a girl dying and having a heart transplant - to Scarface!
