Unlike some actresses who get bumped to the backburner after their characters get married, the exact opposite has happened to Laura Wright, who's been on fire ever since Cassie tried to nail nephew Jonathan for his bad-boy behavior. Alas, the plan backfired in a big way, subsequently giving the compelling Wright a showcase to display a plethora of emotions, as Cassie desperately fought to keep from coming to light the secret that could destroy her family.
While hindsight is always 20/20, Cassie should have thought twice before going up against Jonathan, an expert at mind games. When his drug wore off and Cassie awoke, the bride-to-be was horrified to discover her nephew lying beside her. Wright brought a tragic believability to her character as Cassie all at once emoted feelings of fury, grief, and disbelief upon realizing that not only had her scheme failed but that Jonathan may have molested her while she was unconscious! We could feel Cassie's helplessness leap off the screen as she wondered how everything so quickly went wrong.
WEDDING DAZE
After a brief retreat, Cassie faced her fiancé, Edmund, who ignored that something was obviously wrong and insisted that they marry anyway. Wanting to believe that her encounter with Jonathan was nothing but a bad dream, Cassie went ahead and recited her vows, with Wright delivering an emotional performance of a woman who never had more to lose.
Even though she was falling apart on the inside, Cassie remained upbeat with Edmund. "I just don't want to look into your eyes and see anything but the love that's there right now," she told her groom in a tone that almost sounded apologetic. But the real treat came soon thereafter in watching the actress shift from vulnerable to confrontational when Cassie called her nasty nephew a "heartless, soulless monster." While Jonathan certainly deserves Cassie's wrath, Wright still evoked the reality that her alter ego had only herself to blame for this predicament.
SISTER ACT
Yet is has been in the scenes with sister Reva - who has clearly taken Jonathan's side in the matter - that Wright has been able to explore the most, alternately playing Cassie's fear of losing her siblings love while maintaining that Reva's son is just plain despicable. As the half sisters demonstrate a constant push/pull in their relationship, Wright, as usual, more than handles her own in scenes with three-time Emmy winner Kim Zimmer (Reva).
While it's a shame that Cassie's plan to expose Jonathan failed, we now get to see the beautiful and talented Wright shine and succeed like never before!
