GUIDING LIGHT--She's having a baby!

But will a Scheming Edmund put the kibosh on Richard and Cassie's great expectation?

First came love, then came marriage, and now GUIDING LIGHT's Cassie and Richard Winslow need the proverbial baby carriage! For months, the royal couple agonized over whether the measles had left Cassie unable to bear any more children. (At one point, she even attempted to leave Richard because there was a chance that she wouldn't be able to give him an heir, one of the stipulations of their original engagement 'agreement') Yet, Richard's love for Cassie was so strong that he took her as his bride nonetheless. And ever since their post-honeymoon trip to a fertility specialist, who determined that the princess should have no problems conceiving a child, the newlyweds have been hard at work.

The duo's dedication to doing their,um,royal duty, pays off in a big way this week when Cassie learns the real reason behind her irrational mood swings.

Pregnant Pause

During most of last week, Cassie wasn't feeling quite like herself. "She picked a fight with Richard, which is like, 'Can y ou believe it? Cassie and Richard have an argument!'" laughs the princess' portrayer, Laura Wright. "Everything that Richard said was the wrong thing and set her off,"recalls the prince's portrayer, Bradley Cole. "I think all men have been in that situation. You better just sit down, shut up and take it on the chin, because nothing you say is ever going to make them feel any better!"

"I should have known!"

Nevertheless, Cassie reluctantly accompanied her husband to a fete being thrown in their honor -- where her odd behavior continued in a big way. "I was ignoring him, walked away a few times...I complained that my friends weren't there," recounts Wright in character. "It was total girl stuff." Then, at last, the truth finally hit her over the head like a ton of bricks: Cassie figured out that an estrogen overload was contributing to her recent spate of emotional outbursts. "Cassie started describing how she feels," Cole reports, "and that's when she realized that she'd felt that way before...when she was pregnant with her other two children."

The waiting game

This week, anxious as to discern whether their suspicions are correct, the prince and princess conduct a little at-home experiment -- by the hardest! First, they must find a way to keep the whole country from finding out that they think they might be "with child". Then there's the matter of following the instructions on the home-pregnancy test itself.

Make room for Daddy!

Every second during the arduous waiting period, Richard is bouncing off the walls in anticipation, hoping that the stick will turn a nice shade of purple. "Finally, the test is positive," Cole reports. "It's a wonderful moment."

Uncle Eddie

Unable to contain their excitement at the prospect of being parents, the newlyweds inform, of all people, that rapscallion Edmund of their news. "Edmund pretends to be happy," says Wright. "And that's a stretch." Lucky for him, he's a sly actor. Despite the fact that there is a part of Cassie that never will trust her two-faced brother-in-law, Wright believes that her and Cole's characters are so overjoyed by their good news that neither one of them suspects that Edmund could be up to no good. "That would too much be taking away from the happiness between Cassie and Richard right now, knowing that she's pregnant," she effuses.

Snake in the grass

However, the levels to which Edmund will sink next week in putting a stop to this royal production just may be an all new low, even for the prince of darkness himself! And considering his past history where the matter of Cassie's future in the country of San Cristobel is concerned, it's almost a foregone conclusion that whatever scheme he concocts somehow will destroy her and Richard's good fortune.

Teases Cole: "So stay tuned to find out just how he does it!"
