Excerpts from Pat's Personals on Katie the Dog
SPW Dec 17, 2002
Though it was still prior to the official start of the adoptathon, Laura Wright (Cassie) was already there with 4-year-old Lauren, 2-year-old, John, and their nanny. Laura was looking for a puppy for Lauren, and by getting there early she had first dibs on a fabulous 4-month-old rottweiler-Doberman mix dubbed Francesca, which Marcello Forte, the shelters director, assured her would be temperamentally perfect for her kids. Laura looked dubious. "She's beautiful, but she's so big! Look at her feet! She's going to be huge! John (her husband) will never go for it." But by the time John arrived, Laura and Lauren were both in love. Lauren had renamed the dog Katie, and Laura was marveling over the fact that the enormous puppy had allowed herself to be led around for a couple hours by a 4-year-old. John capitulated on the spot. "We definitely needed a dog." He admitted, "and I knew that we would end up with one tonight. So far its only one, so, hopefully&.. It's over soon right?"
The highlight of the evening was the Francesca/Katie adoption by the Wright (pun intended) family. As Grant put it, "A great dog got a great home. Thats a success story." I spoke with Laura three days after the adoption became official, and she said she was very glad they had done it. "Shes absolutely wonderful." Aside from the fact that their Dalmatian's nose was slightly out of joint, Katie was already fitting right into the family.
"She was yelping because she wanted to be with us in bed, watching TV, and I said to John, 'Why don't we bring her in with us?' and he said, 'There is no way; she's not even potty trained.' But this morning she comes running her butt off into the bedroom and jumps on top of everybody."
She's been playing to the point of exhaustion in the front and back yards of their New Jersey house and doesn't even know that 12 acres await her at their weekend home in Pennsylvania.
