The Princess Bride
CBS Soaps In Depth March 28, 2000
Guests at the inevitable nuptials of Prince Richard Winslow and bride-to-be Cassie Layne may have some difficulty figuring out exactly what girt to bring. After all, what do you get for the nearlyweds who have everything?
Considering the fact that neither Cassie nor Richard are willing to admit their true feelings, perhaps a little truth serum and a push into one another's arms would be ideal. After allo, there's anticipation and there there's& Well, them! "There's only so much you can take!" laughs Cassie's protratyer, Laura Wright. "These two can barely keep their hands off one another!"
Truth Or Consequences?
Richard loves Cassie. Cassie loves Richard. Anyone can see it. So what, exactly, is keeping the pair from falling into one another's arms? Wright believes that for her character, it's a matter of trust. "That's a biggie for Cassie," she says.
And who can blame the poor girl? Abandoned at birth and molested by her foster father ("That's huge!" understates the actress), Reva's half sister has been divorced and widowed and has supported herself and dauther Tammy by stripping. "It's a Cinderella story," Wright says. "There's Cassie, a single mother of two whos fiancé was killed and she finds herself struggling and thinking nothing is ever going to work out for her. And then, in walks a prince who says, "I'm going to work for you.'"
And so began the fairy tale. "It's every girl's dream," enthuses Wright. "I mean, who doesn't love that story? And it's that buildup. Are they going to kiss? And him riding in to save the day. What little girl doesn't dream about the prince on his white horse?"
Past Imperfect
Too bad Cassie's big sis just happens to be not only a mantrap extraordinaire but Richard's long-lost love, the former princess of San Cristobel. "Cassie thought Richard was beginning to love her a couple of months ago, but then he went to spend time with Reva," Wright notes, explaining her alter ego's uncertainty of His Highness' loyalty.
Then there's the fact that despite his obious devotion, Richard has declared so loudly and often his lack of feelings as to convince everyone except Cassie that he doth protest too much. "Even though his actions may be saying one thing, his mought says another," sighs Wright. "What does Cassie do?"
Rather than open her heart, Cassie, too, is biting her tongue. "If he thinks she loves him, he might say, 'I ca't marry you,'" Wright points out, adding that the future Mrs. Winslow could be consideringt an alternate plan of action. "Maybe she's thinking, "I'm going to try this again and try to get him to want me, but I can't assume anything.'"
Three Little Words
Wright suspects that true confessions may be in the future for Richard and his intended. "It gets to the point," she suggests, "where it's like, 'I'm about to go nuts! I either tell her and take the risk of her not loving me, or wig out. But what's the worst that can happen?'"
Once love is in the air, what's next for the couple? "I'm sure lots of [obstacles] will continue to come up," Wright speculates. "Cassie has some challenges ahead of her, realizing the responsibility of being royalty and the sacrifices that come with it."
But hey, what's a little sacrifice to a woman who could have been born under the sign "Will Strip For Farm"? "I believe they're going to be unbelievably in love," predicts Wright. "Cassie and Richard could be a couple that truly lasts for a long time."
