The Story of Carly

Caroline Benson came to Port Charles as "Carly Roberts" looking for her birth mother, Bobbie Spencer Jones. While Bobbie was unaware of Carly's real identity, uncle Luke was fully knowledgeable of the fact that Caroline was alive and well in Port Charles. She set her sights on hurting her mother for giving her up for adoption and proceeded to have an affair with step-dad, Tony Jones.

After sleeping with both AJ Quartermaine and Tony, Carly became pregnant. She asked friend and ex-lover Jason Morgan to pretend to be the baby's father, so neither potential daddies could get her child. When her baby son almost died (as did Carly) during birth, Jason was forced to care for the baby (whom he names Michael, after his best friend Sonny) while Carly suffered from post-partum depression. Becoming closer to Bobbie, Carly bonded with her son and told her mother who she really was.

Tony Jones kidnapped Baby Michael and when he was found not-guilty at his trial, a devastated Carly shot him in open court. To escape prosecution, she pretended to be crazy and lived in Ferncliffe, while Jason fathered Michael and planned to get Carly out.

Once free, Carly was determined to make a family with her son and Jason. However, Jason's girlfriend Robin had other ideas. Robin finally told AJ that he was, infact, Michael's father. Trying to "plan" her way out of the situation, Carly moved into the Quartermaine household and married AJ (even though, she was still in love with Jason and planned on having a future with him).

One night, Carly saw Jason dancing with teenage Elizabeth Webber and became upset. She went to see Sonny in order to find out what was really going on. An argument ensued and the two had "hate sex." Afterward, Jason walked in on them half-dressed and left. Carly tried to explain to Jason, but he wouldn't listen and left town.

Within a couple of months, Carly found out she was pregnant from the one-night stand. She tried to fool AJ into thinking the baby was his, but he figured out and, soon, so did Sonny. Sonny got Carly and Michael out of the Quartermaine house and moved them into his penthouse. Despite the fact that they disliked one another, Carly and Sonny decided to raise their baby as a unit. They slowly became friends and lovers, but lost the baby when Carly fell down a flight of stairs during an argument with AJ.

Carly became unglued after the miscarriage and tried to shoot AJ at the Nurses' Ball. Sonny then decided to take Carly away to his island to heal. The two became closer and closer, but a misunderstanding led Carly to move out. Neither could admit that they wanted the other.

When a plan of Carly's to help Sonny went wrong, the two were faced with having to marry in order to keep Sonny out of prison. Jason came back to town, making the decision even more difficult. The couple ended up marrying, thinking that the other didn't want it. Eventually, they admitted they wanted to be married and soon after admitted they were in love.

In love and wanting a family, Carly schemed to get Sonny out of the mob. He was refusing to have children because he felt his life was too dangerous and that he was cursed. The plan went kaput and Sonny threw Carly out. During their separation, Carly went through a lot of ups and downs about herself. Knowing she'd always love Sonny, Carly decided she wanted her husband, but only if he'd forgive and truly trust her.

Differences aside, the couple agreed to do what was best for Michael. Carly let Sonny legally adopt the boy and they worked on raising him together.

After seeing Sonny in bed with Alexis, Carly had an accident in which her car ran off a cliff. Thinking she was dead, Sonny finally realized what a mistake he'd made in not forgiving. When Carly walked in on her own funeral, Sonny ran after her. The two talked things through and reunited.

Again, happy and in love, Carly decided she wanted another child. However, things quickly became crazy and it was put on the backburner. Sonny's new enemy brought a presumed-dead Brenda Barratt back into town, Sonny had to pretend to be dead, and Sonny, Jason, and Brenda were all accused of murdering enemy Luis Alcazar.

Once things settled down, Sonny whisked Carly away to a cabin, where they conceived a baby. The happiness was short-lived when friend and business manager Ric Lansing made Carly think she's slept with her. Not knowing who the child's father was, Carly finally told Sonny that she'd been drugged and raped. A DNA test proved that the baby was Sonny's, but relief was short as Carly cared for Sonny through a mental breakdown. It was then revealed that Carly wasn't raped and that the mental rapist, Ric, was actually Sonny's half-brother.

Ric, intent on destroying Sonny's life, kidnapped a pregnant Carly from Jason and Courtney's wedding and locked her in a Panic Room in his house. Carly fought him and tried to escape, but failed. When Carly became severly injured, Ric was prepared to let Carly go, but Lorenzo Alcazar (Luis' brother) made sure she stayed locked up. Again, Ric tried to let Carly go and Alcazar took Carly on his yacht. While keeping her prisoner, Alcazar became obsessed with Carly.

Once rescued by Sonny, Jason, and Ric, Carly went home, ready to have her baby. Alcazar continued to pursue her. While giving birth, Carly was shot in the head after the bullet went through Alcazar. In a coma for weeks, Carly awoke having no emotional memory of her life. Even after getting her feelings back, she was plagued by weird visions of Alcazar (who was determined to steal her from Sonny). Carly checked herself into Shadybrooke Mental Hospital where she was drugged and tortured by Faith Roscoe.

Carly and Sonny split up after the each found the other with Alcazar and Sam McCall, respectively. The two fought nastily for their children, but eventually agreed that their children needed them both. A few months later, Carly moved back in with Sonny, but only as a coparent. After a death scare with Sonny, the two reunited.

Deciding that she wanted to find her birth father, Carly was upset to realize that her father was John Durant, a federal prosecuter intent on putting Sonny away. John also found out who Carly was and moved to Port Charles, in hopes of using Carly to get to Sonny.

When Sonny's daughter Kristina became critically ill, Carly was forced to tell Sonny that he was the father and that she'd known for almost a year. Once again, the two decided to divorce. This time for good, but on friendly terms.

Carly sons were kidnapped by Faith Roscoe. She and Sonny frantically searched for their boys, while FBI Agent Reese Marshall was assigned to the case. Lorenzo, Jason, and Sam also helped in the search. Although they got Morgan back, Michael was presumed dead. Carly had visions of him until she was convinced that he was actually alive. She learned that a presumed-dead AJ had kidnapped him.

A distraught and confused Michael first thought that Carly had killed AJ. Then, he believed that he'd been the one to do it.

Carly asked Alcazar to marry her. The couple wed and started a life together. It ended when Alcazar became angry over Carly's lies..... mainly over Sonny. At the same time, Carly discovered that Reese Marshall was Charlotte Roberts, Carly's best friend from high school that she saw "die" in a tragic car accident.

Everything caved on Carly and she had a mental breakdown. Determined to help her the way she helped him, Sonny took her in and cared for her. Carly became worse, however, and Sonny was forced to put her in Rose Lawn, a mental home.
